New instruments, new sounds, sound settings and soundscapes: that is TONLAGEN 2014. Every room and corner of the entire Festival Theatre will be humming with sound, from musical sewing machines to Indonesian bamboo spears and Chinese underground sound installations. Visiting the festival is like going on an adventure in sound; a stroll through a universal sound environment.
This year's festival focuses on unusual and new musical instruments. On the theme of When things are hopping, TONLAGEN presents inventors, musicians and composers searching for new ways and means of making tones, harmonies, melodies and rhythm in contemporary music.
The second focus of the festival, New Sounds from the Far East, turns towards the Orient. The boom towns of East Asia which astound us Europeans with their whirlwind adaptability are not only focal points for social development but also hotspots of artistic innovation. TONLAGEN has invited some of the most exciting composers, musicians and bands to be its guests, and will be presenting the latest musical trends in this massive region.
TONLAGEN is funded by the German Federal Cultural Foundation, the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, Goethe-Institut and Federal Foreign Office.
