Within the frame of springhouse Festival
springhouse is a project combining research, an artists’ residency, a programme of performances and a festival. So far, springhouse has taken place four times in different places in Dresden. In 2017, it will be run for the first time by HELLERAU – European Centre for the Arts, Dresden. We have invited more than 20 artists working in the visual arts, performing arts and music to a residency in HELLERAU from 1. – 7. May. From 5.– 7. May the results of the residency week will be on display in the form of exhibitions, installations, lectures, performances, showings and other formats.
The central focus of this research is HELLERAU Festival Theatre, its adjoining buildings and the outdoor area with the Golgi Park intercultural garden. The entire premises will be “occupied” by the invited artists, transformed, repositioned and set in an artistic light. HELLERAU will serve as a workplace, a studio and an arts venue, following the exact same principle as the utopia of the “Laboratory of Modernity” set up over a hundred years ago. The over-arching topic of springhouse 2017 in HELLERAU is “SCALE”. In their aesthetic practice, the artists invited deal with various scales (architectural, ethical, historical), integrating the venue's architecture and history into their works. They examine different scales, question conventions, test generalised standards and rewrite rules. springhouse is intentionaly conceptualised as a process which takes art out of its context in the museum and places it in relationship with different settings. This changes our view not only of the works of art but also of the locations and places where they are displayed. The borders between studio, installation, performance and lecture are flexible. Moreover, springhouse sees itself as a platform for exchange between artists from Dresden and abroad. They all live and work together for one week in HELLERAU – precisely reenacting what took place here more than a hundred years ago: a contemporary Laboratory for the Arts.
