Festspielhaus Hellerau

Back to Calendar

The HELLERAU residency programme provides artists of various cultures, nationalities and genres (performing arts, music and the visual arts) with a place and time to do artistic research and develop new productions. The residency programme is open to professionals from Germany and abroad working in dance and performance, music and contemporary art.

By allowing them to use our studios free of charge and stay at our apartments, we offer the artists conditions in which they can go about their work without pressure. The fully equipped apartments make the ideal base and retreat for an intensive work process. The rehearsals studio on the top floor and our second studio on the nearby industrial estate allow their users to work intensely, without time restrictions. Being close to the other artists and cultural creatives at the Festival Theatre creates a varied flow of ideas and adds fresh impetus to their own artistic engagement. We support the artists during their residency thanks to our internal structures on every level (production, equipment, artistic direction). During or at the end of their residency, we invite the artists to present their work in a format of their choice (open rehearsals, workshops, showings, discussions or exhibitions). Once the production is ready, they can consider a performance at the Festival Theatre.

Once a year, there is an international call for a two-week autumn residency. Based on various criteria, artists are selected by the residency directors along with the programme directors (for the performing arts, music or special projects) and the Festival Theatre manager. As well as travel expenses and a daily allowance, the residency also involves additional financial support in the form of a scholarship.

Since 2014 the west annex of the festival house consists of eight single apartments and two double apartments, a large community kitchen, an additional lounge and a modern rehearsal studio with enclosed wardrobes.
