The bombs that fell on Aleppo were one of the factors behind the surge of refugees which has recently shaken Europe to its foundations. It is for this reason that we have invited Omar Rajeh to appear with his latest production #minaret. His work deals with the destruction of Aleppo. Can a city die? And along with it the values, ideals, principles, stories and culture that made it what it was? The minaret of the Umayyad Mosque of Aleppo dominated the entire city for almost 1,000 years. Now it lies in ruins. #minaret is a coming-together of contemporary dance, the visual arts and live music, inspired by Aleppo’s legacy of classical music. The piece takes us into the heart of the city and asks questions about destruction and memory. Last year, the Lebanese director Omar Rajeh opened the festival Mashreq to Maghreb with his piece Beytna.
